Understanding Confirmation
at Palm Coast UMC
What does "confirmation" mean?
Confirmation marks the first public affirmation by a baptized Christian to live out the baptismal and membership vows. Through confirmation, you become a professing member of both our local congregation and The United Methodist Church.
Can I be confirmed more than once?
While you can reaffirm your commitment to your baptismal and membership vows as needed throughout your life, confirmation is a one-time event. We encourage reaffirmation whenever you feel called to do so, though this is distinct from confirmation.
Does confirmation require a series of classes?
Preparation for confirmation at Palm Coast UMC may include classes, retreats, or service projects to deepen your understanding of the commitment you are making. However, the term "confirmation" specifically refers to the moment you publicly confirm your commitment, not the process leading up to it.
Is there a minimum age for confirmation?
At Palm Coast UMC, we follow the guidance of The United Methodist Church. The age at which someone is ready for confirmation is determined by our appointed pastor, considering both spiritual maturity and personal readiness. While middle school (7th or 8th grade) has traditionally been a common time, it’s more important to ensure that each person is ready to fully embrace their baptismal vows.
Is it too late for me to be confirmed as an adult?
No, it is never too late! Whether you are 16, 60, or older, you are welcome to be confirmed when you feel ready to make your public commitment to live out your faith.
I’m coming from another denomination. Do I need to be confirmed again?
If you have been confirmed in another denomination, you do not need to be confirmed again. At Palm Coast UMC, we refer to this process as “reception,” where we welcome you into our congregation as a professing member. You will be guided through an orientation to introduce you to our congregation’s practices, as well as our district, conference, and denomination.
